DESIGN: The Millennium Mill

VISION: To expand and revitalise existing communities whilst establishing a historically enriched communal hub within the Docklands

Key: Room colour relates to informational box colour

RETAIL

We provided ground floor and second floor to provide an active base to the mills and generate local economy, aided by the enterprise zone. We aim to encourage small businesses into this area.

OFFICE SPACE

We provided a variety of sizes of office space for small/ medium start ups. These offices will also help to generate local economy by contributing to food and retail during their lunch and provide added eyes on the street

RESIDENTIAL

The residential aspect of the mill is aimed at the luxury apartment market. With views of the Thames and large amounts of floor space we believe these could be marketed for high prices.

All residents have access to a waterside shared/ community garden.

STUDIOS

We have incorporated studios to highlight the creativity within the community. We hope to draw in art and design students from the local universities and the studios themselves have glass panels facing onto the Mill Square for artists to display their work and potentially sell their work to visitors.

public OPEN SPACE

In addition to the open Mills Square to encourage street vendors with car access directly into the site, there is also sheltered and outdoor seating to retain a high footfall.

FOOD AND DRINK

In terms of food and drink, small cafes and shops are encouraged on the main first and second floor in addition to street vendors and food vans

There is a designated café area to the left hand side of the building with a roof garden for outdoor/ luxury seating.

There is also a restaurant area on the top floor of the Mills building, similar to that in the OXO Tower Warf. This would contribute to the night life and with a roof garden across the bridge, there is added vitality and eyes on the street.

AMENITIES

BUND SEATING

The bund seating along the water's edge not only provides seating on the steps much like in the Kings Cross development we took inspiration from, but activates the waterfront

The bund seating is designed to use some of the materials dug up from developing the site sustainably whilst also adding dimension.

There is also a flat top for movable furniture so visitors who may not be able to sit on steps (young mothers and the elderly) can still enjoy the Thames view.

Ground and second floor shops will be encouraged to have toilets.

We have included an indoor garden with views of the Thames to encourage longer stay times as well as additional indoor seating.

We also hope the indoor garden will make use of the CO2 and increase oxygen throughout the Mills, for greater health and wellbeing of occupants.
